if you are the ocean, i am the shore. and i’ll hold you back, so you don’t have to try anymore.
at my grandparents' house, my room watches the sun set. at my grandparents' house, i have a baby grand at my disposal. at my grandparents' house, we have a record player and hundreds of jazz and classical albums to go with it. at my grandparents' house, i lie down late and wake up early. at my grandparents' house, i dream of string quartets when i don't dream of harmonizing to imagine dragons. at my grandparents', the mason jar is again mine to drink out of. the smell of my grandparents' house has become subconscious in my nostrils, and that shows me i am home, or that i am at least making this my home.

  7. I love sewing. No, I'm not kidding. I always say "This is going to sound weird but..." before I tell people that I love sewing.
Do you like sewing? Or is that your grandparents? I hope to get a sewing machine of my own someday. That would be amazing. But for now, hand-sewing is just fine.

    Love,
    ~Jenny

    1. embroidering is something i use to do all-day-erry-day when i was little. both my grandma's LOVE sewing; my dad's mom mostly does bedding and drapes and my mom's mom does a lot of clothing. the room that i slept in my entire childhood at grandma&granddaddy's house is also the room my grandma sewed in. occasionally, since i'm older, she lets me use it. whatever i do, it always ends up pretty crappy, but it's fun. it feels... adventurous.

  8. Hi Jocee! I've been reading your blog now for awhile and I thought you'd be a good person to ask this question. I am trying to get as many people as possible to tell me their definition of 'weird' for a video I am working on. It has to do with church, and I thought that by working on a video I would be able to realize what being 'weird' for God really is. The title of the series here is "Weird (Because normal isn't working)"
I hope you enjoy your time at your grandparents, I know it is always fun to hang around my own. We do it so often because they live a couple thousand miles away. I always end up reminiscing about a time that I was never a part of. It is wunderbar.
    Have a good day!

  10. I really really like this. really really. it reminds me of my grandma--she quilts constantly, so you can't go to her house without finding sewing stuff strewn all about. and as boring as it can be sometimes, I've always loved having my own bed whenever I go there, the one that was my aunt's when she was little, the one right by the window where you can hear the trains go by late at night. and I've always loved going downstairs to that ugly green carpet and matching pool table and counting the number of collector's plates my grandma owns. dude. I need to go to my grandma's and photograph it now. you're inspiring. the end.

  14. you know, things like this, they normally don't make me want to cry. but this, it did. it seeped its way into my heart, melted around everything that's in there. and i felt it. people can take good pictures and write good posts, but I don't always feel them. this, for some reason i have to keep going back to. i have to study every shot. and i think i would love to get that photo of your eye + the one of the sunset in the trees right above it printed, and frame them one above the other, because they're a pair and your eye is the reflection of the sunset. that chain of golden bokeh along your eyelid is one of the most fabulous things ever and your dark eyelashes and the way the focus goes in right to the edge of your eye i can't get over. basically i sound like a photo nerd, but i am and this is for reals some good photography. that picture of your eye, girl. can't. get. over. it.

  16. grandma's house has always been a safe haven for me. the smells (especially of her kitchen), the rooms, the clean sheets, the bookshelves, everything. no matter where i go or what i do, i think grandma's house will always be home.

    love ya, doll.

sometimes i do not understand why you guys like me so much, but the fact that you do (and that you keep coming around) makes me happier than you can even imagine.
